There are two buttons on the left of the Moonwriter. The left button is used to transport the paper, the right of the two buttons is the write button. To the right is the flat writing square with straight and circular indentations. Above the writing square, a lever with a ring as a finger holder protrudes from the device.

To write, the writing button must be pressed while inserting your finger in the hole in the lever above the writing square and tracing the corresponding moon letters on the writing square along the indentations.
